Concert Series Finale - Sunday, March 21
Welcome spring with the final concert of the Troy Public Library's Sunday Series featuring the chamber music repertoire and warmly blended sound of the Adventure Club Cello Quartet. This ensemble is comprised of four area cellists: Naomi Levine, David Levine, Irina Tichkhonova and Debra Shuster. While several of the performers have delighted Library audiences at previous Sunday Afternoons with the Arts events, this is their first visit as a grouping of four cellists.
The performance is free of charge and sponsored by the Friends of Troy Public Library. Go to the Library's program calendar to register beginning March 15.

Sunday Concerts at the Library
Sunday Afternoons with the Arts at the Library will feature music of the balalaika with Gennady Zut on December 13, at 3 pm in the Library's Meeting Room.
Enjoy works played on the balalaika, a triangular stringed instrument well-known to audiences through Lara's Theme from the film, Doctor Zhivago. Gennady Zut will perform with his wife, pianist Tatyana Zut. Gennady and Tatyana moved to the United States from Russia in 1992.
An acclaimed virtuoso in his native Russia, Gennady Zut now shares the magic of the balalaika with audiences in America and Europe... Critics hailed him as "a truly communicative stylist who made the impossible seem easy..."
"When I first heard Gennady Zut play the balalaika... I immediately invited him to perform with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra... Mr. Zut is an outstanding virtuoso... His sensitive, emotional playing demonstrates the truly wonderful expressive qualities of the balalaika with taste and style. Mr. Zut also performs in a duo with his wife Tatyana, who is an excellent pianist..."
Neeme Jarvi, Music Director Emeritus, Detroit Symphony Orchestra
Library concerts are sponsored by The Friends of the Troy Public Library and are free of charge with open seating to the room's capacity. No reservations are necessary. Come early for a good seat. Contact Barbara Schaich at 248.524.3568 for additional information.

Motown Celebrates
2009 is Motown's 50th birthday, and the party's on at the Troy Public Library.
Check out the display near the New Books in the Adult Services area for titles on the made-in-Detroit record company and its many artists past and present. Included, too, are books on other significant African-American music genres, notably jazz and blues. Don't forget to stop by our CD collection to sample that marvelous Motown sound.
For a more hands-on experience, consider a visit to the Motown Historical Museum and the adjacent Hitsville U.S.A., Motown's original recording studio. Call 313.875.2264 for visitor information.

How Do I Request Audiovisual Materials Not in the Library Catalog?
What's Up with the Library Catalog?
We have recently launched our new Library catalog, Polaris, a stand-alone system to handle all of our materials, circulation, cataloging, patron records and transactions.
As a result, more of our audiovisual (AV) materials are now available for you to borrow at any given time, as they will not be shipped to other libraries to fill their holds. Additionally, requests you place on library materials will only be in competition with other Troy Library cardholders. You will no longer see waiting lists of 300+ names on a title. One borrower was thrilled to learn that he had moved from #129 on the list to #4. We have also reallocated funds from other areas into AV to add extra copies and more new titles of DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and the like.
You Can Help!
If you don't find the AV items you want in Polaris, consider filling out a Suggestion for Purchase form, available at all public desks, or use the contact form on our website. We will make every effort to acquire them for the Library. If you need the titles more quickly, you may utilize Suburban Library Cooperative (SLC) libraries. We still belong to the SLC. Troy residents retain access to all of the SLC materials as before. Only the methods of getting them have changed. Our staff will happily assist you in any of these processes, as needed.
How Do I Get AV Items from SLC Libraries?
AV materials, including VHS tapes, DVDs and audiobooks, as well as books, are still available to you from SLC libraries. However, they cannot be delivered to Troy. They must be checked out on the SLC system, which we no longer have. Take your Troy card (with ID) to any SLC location to check out items from that library, once staff has entered your card number in their system. We can also call any of these libraries to set aside material, to make sure it is waiting for you before you drive to that location.
After your Troy card has been entered in the SLC system, you may also place requests (reserve) AV items through the iBistro shared catalog, requesting pickup at the most convenient location - Sterling Heights is the closest SLC member to Troy. Once you open iBistro, click on Sterling Heights Library, and search just as you used to, leaving "All" selected under "Libraries." Once you have checked out SLC materials, you may return them to Troy, or any SLC library. Just be aware that they will not show as "checked in" on the SLC system until they have been delivered back to the loaning library and checked in there. The SLC check in will be "back dated" to the actual day the materials were returned to Troy, so overdues will not be incurred unless the original return to Troy is after the due date.
Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time of transition, and for helping us continue to develop our AV collections to serve you better!
Coraline: A Michigan Connection
If you love being frightened out of your shoes read Coraline.
An adventurous girl, bored in her new home discovers a secret door that leads to a brick wall. One night the wall disapears and she comes face to face with her "other" family.
A movie made from the book has ties to Michigan because in it Coraline has moved from Michigan to Oregon. A snow globe with the Detroit Zoo's famous Rackham Fountain Bears is a clue to her parents disappearence. Check out the book, ebook or sound recording from the movie while waiting for the DVD to come out.
