Hand Writing

Attention teen writers!

The Troy Public Library is launching a creative writing contest in celebration of Teen Read Week. You could win a Borders gift card or see your work featured on our new website!

We are looking for short fiction (1,200 words or fewer) and poetry (20 lines or fewer). Library patrons ages 13 to 17 are welcome to submit their typed, double-spaced work to the Adult Services Department reference desk by December 7. Feel free to enter in both categories if you like, but please only submit one piece in each category.

To be eligible to win, be sure your submission includes:

  • Your name
  • Your age
  • Your phone number
  • Your email address

Good luck! We're looking forward to reading your work.

For the writing contest, are we to send it directly thru the link here on the website? Or is there not a link? Do we need to send it and give it to our instuctor? Will our they need our pin and number at the front desk of the TPL reference desk?

Thank you for your questions. All you have to do is bring a hard copy of your submission to the Adult Services desk in the Troy Library, and a staff member will take care of it for you. Please include your name, age, phone number and email address.

Good luck!

I am a freelance writer myself and I stopped being a teenager on April 2 2005! Why wasn't this Teen Writing Contest in place before 2004?! I take it there's no ADULT writing contest anywhere around here soon!

On the other hand, I'd love to see an All-Ages Anime/Manga Drawing Contest of some sort dedicated to current social issues, such as sustainablitily, eco-friendliness, ending poverty, ending the war, etc...

Thank you for your comments on the Teen Writing Contest. We're looking forward to reading the entries and hope to make this an annual event. A manga drawing contest for teens has been planned for early spring and is greatly anticipated by the TPL Anime Club members. There is no adult writing contest currently planned, but your suggestions will be reviewed by the Adult Services staff.
